The Crimson Jazz Trio was a jazz trio led by drummer Ian Wallace, formerly of King Crimson, who re-interpreted King Crimson's music.
The trio was conceived by Wallace, who recruited Tim Landers (bass) and Jody Nardone (piano) in 2004. They recorded the album The King Crimson Songbook, Volume One (Voiceprint) in 2005. The album includes material from beyond Wallace's tenure in King Crimson. It was supported with a few live dates in different parts of the US, but plans for further touring were scrapped due to Wallace's falling ill.
The band finished recording a second album, The King Crimson Songbook, Volume Two, with assistance from Jakko Jakszyk and Mel Collins (Wallace's colleagues in 21st Century Schizoid Band; Collins is also a King Crimson alumnus) before Wallace died on February 22, 2007. It was released on April 7, 2009 on Inner Knot Records.
Abituati alla prevedibilità a cui siamo stati abituati da una delle formazioni più diffuse del jazz odierno, e cioè il trio con piano-basso-batteria, restiamo subito sorpresi da quello che fa questo trio inglese sotto la guida del pianista Jody Nardone. L'idea di sviscerare il Songbook dei King Crimson, storica formazione di rock progressivo, è senz'altro nuova, per cui ben vengano, se non altro per l'originalità, queste esecuzioni di un trio che suonerebbe benissimo anche repertori più comuni e che, come si premura di scrivere Sid Smith nelle note di copertina, non ha ha firmato un semplice "cover album".
Che il jazz abbia sempre avuto la capacità di assorbire e fagocitare materiali fra i più diversi ci era già noto, tuttavia il Crimson Jazz Trio riesce ancora a sorprendere chi lo ascolta per come sa affrontare un repertorio che, pur ispirato da certo jazz-rock del periodo, ben poca attenzione ha ricevuto dai jazzisti contemporanei, forse per l'intrinsica difficoltà a farlo suonare con swing e tempi in levare. I temi con le belle melodie sono suonati da Jody Nardone con uno stile fluido e arioso, non lontano da quello di un Chick Corea, sempre elegante, anche nei tempi più concitati. Il suo è un organico molto affiatato, dai meccanismi rodati e che presenta il basso elettrico di Tim Landers perfettamente integrato nella formazione e che - a tratti - ricorda Eberhard Weber per come usa lo strumento.
Nonostante la costruzione precisa delle esecuzioni ed il controllo dei meccanismi dialogici tutto suona e scorre in modo molto fluido, spontaneo, grazie alla lunghezza dei brani. C'è sempre lo spazio per la sorpresa, per il cambio di direzione improvviso che viene assorbito all'interno di una architettura disposta in modo sapiente.
